Nepal establishes formal diplomatic relations with Suriname

KATHMANDU— Nepal and Suriname established formal diplomatic relations on Thursday. With the signing of a Joint Communiqué to this effect in New York, USA, the two sides have agreed to further strengthen the friendship and cooperation at the bilateral level as well as in multilateral forums.

The two countries have been working closely at the United Nations and other intergovernmental processes, including the Non-aligned Movement and the Group of 77, according to a press statement issued by New York-based Nepal’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

Nirmal Raj Kafle, Chargé d’Affaires of the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations and Mrs. Kitty Sweeb, Chargé d’Affaires of the Permanent Mission of Suriname to the United Nations signed the Joint Communiqué on behalf of their respective countries.

On the occasion, the two acting heads of the mission discussed the matters of mutual interests, including the potential areas for cooperation and issues of global concerns. Suriname, a unicameral presidential republic, lies in the northern South America, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean, between French Guiana and Guyana. The number of countries with which Nepal maintains diplomatic ties has reached 163.

All programmes of Nepal Sambat New Year 1139 cancelled

KATHMANDU— All the programmes to be organised on the occasion of the Nepal Sambat New Year 1139 have been cancelled due to the demise of pioneer of the Nepal Sambat movement, and leader of the Indigenous Nationalities movement and human rights movement, Padma Ratna Tuladhar.

All the programmes have been cancelled in honour of late Tuladhar. A meeting of Nepal Sambat Nhudah National Celebration Committee held today took the decision to this effect.

A Main Celebration Programme had already been scheduled at Basantapur, Kathmandu, on November 8 on the occasion of Nepal Sambat 1139 New Year this year too as in the previous years. All programmes to be organised at different places on the same day have also been cancelled.

Coordinator of Newa Jagaran Manch, Sujib Bajracharya, said that the meeting also decided to organise all the cancelled programmes at suitable time after the 13th day of the demise of Tuladhar.
