NAY PYI TAW – U Htin Kyaw of the National League for Democracy (NLD), led by Aung San Suu Kyi, was sworn in as Myanmar’s new president on Wednesday.
In a ceremony in the parliament, democracy icon and leader of the ruling party Aung San Suu Kyi was sworn in as minister of foreign affairs, education and energy, and will also hold the president’s office portfolio, Xinhua reported.
She was not able to be president because of a constitutional block even though she led her National League for Democracy party (NLD) to a landslide win in general elections last November.
Military-assigned first vice president U Myint Swe and elected second vice president of the NLD U Henry Van Thio were also sworn in to office.
