Health benefits of yogurt

KATHMANDU — Studies and scientists have showed that consuming yogurt as a feature of your daily diet has numerous health benefits, such as, lowering cancer risk, better immunity and good digestion.

There are several good reasons to have yoghurt in your daily life. One of the good reasons is to eat yogurt is it lowers your developing high blood pressure. “Consuming fat-free and low-fat yogurt may help lower your risk of developing high blood pressure,” says Alvaro Alonso, MD, PhD, associate professor at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health.

Likewise, dermatologist Hema Sundaram, MD says yogurt contains lactic acid, which is a component in some in-office chemical peels. “It gently exfoliates the top layers of the epidermis, which can clear up blemishes and discolorations, and may even reduce fine wrinkles,” Sundaram says.

Key to a healthy heart
Health experts say that regular yogurt consumption can enable people to have a healthy blood pressure; good cholesterol levels that can help improve the general quality of life.

Digestive aid
The probiotics (beneficial bacteria) in some yogurts balance the microflora in your gut, which can aid with digestion as well as keep you regular, says Robin Plotkin, RD, a culinary and nutrition expert.

Lowers breast cancer risk
Intake of probiotics present in foods like yogurt or curd may help increase the proportion of beneficial bacteria in the breast and thus aid in preventing the risk of breast cancer.

The findings from a study conducted in Canada showed that Lactobacillus and Streptococcus, considered to be health-promoting bacteria, were more prevalent in healthy breasts than in cancerous ones. Both groups have anticarcinogenic properties.

Eliminates bad breath
Eating plain yogurt a day decreases bad breath. A recent study discovered that the presence of odor-causing compounds, such as hydrogen sulfide, can be significantly reduced if 6 ounces of yogurt is consumed on a regular basis.

Helps maintaining BMI
Studies reveal that including yogurt in your daily diet can lower your Body Mass Index (BMI), waist circumference, levels of triglycerides, fasting glucose and insulin.

And, yogurt can also be used to cure yeast infection as it contains Lactobacillus acidophilus, a bacterium that also happens to be found in healthy vaginas. Acidophilus kills yeast by producing hydrogen peroxide.

PM Oli in a tweet extended best wishes and congratulations saying he was very happy to know Nepal’s win over the UAE by 14 runs in the third match of the series.

Winning T20 series is another landmark success for Nepali cricket, he said, adding, “It is big achievement for Nepal’s cricket. I would like to heartily congratulate entire members of Nepali cricket squad”.
