DPM Nidhi instruct Gorkha CDO to be ready for local elections

KATHMANDU — Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Bimalendra Nidhi has instructed the concerned authority to put in place a mechanism to outlet the water in the blocked Arun river in Sankhuwasabha carefully so as to mitigate the risk of inundation of human settlement in Barun Bazar.

The flood debris in Barun river in the district had been blocking the water in Arun river in Syakshila Gola in Bhote Khola rural municipality since Thursday evening.

A two-kilometre long artificial lake was formed following the blockage of the river.  Three houses in Barun Bazar received damages due to the damming of the river while four houses are said to be at high risk

A team of technical officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), Nepal Army as well as Armed Police Force are preparing to fly to Barun Bazar in a chopper for the management of the disaster as well as for the mitigation of the risk, according to the MoHA.

The Barun River merges with the Arun River.

According to Chief District Officer in Sankhuwasabha, Shivaraj Joshi, there are 36 police personnel being deployed in the site where water in the Arun River is blocked.

State-Minister for Health, Taraman Gurung is learnt to be on his way for the inspection of the site.

Province 6 named Karnali, capital Surkhet

SURKHET — Province number 6 has became the first province to get a name as a provincial assembly meeting renamed it Karnali on Saturday. The meeting also fixed Birendranagar in Surkhet as its Capital.

A meeting of the provincial assembly convened on Saturday unanimously endorsed the proposal to name the province as ‘Karnali’ and also fixed Birendranagar in Surket as the capital of the province which until now, Birendranagar was the temporary provincial capital.

CPN-UML Parliamentary Party leader of the province Yam Lal Kadel had proposed the name of the province while Din Bandu Shrestha of Nepali Congress, Ganesh Prasad Singh of CPN (Maoist Center) and Sohila Sahi of Rastriya Prajatantra Party seconded the proposal.

The name Karnali was endorsed by 37 of the 40 provincial assembly members.

Likewise, Birendranagar, Surkhet, as Capital was proposed by opposition Nepali Congress’s Jiban Bahadur Shahi.

Speaking at the assembly, lawmaker from Jumla Dig Bandu Shrestha said Karnali will be an appropriate name as it sends out a strong message of geographical unity.

The meeting later unanimously endorsed the proposal. After that, another proposal was also tabled at the assembly, to fix Birendranagar as the provincial capital .

Nepali Congress PP leader of the province Jiwan Bahadur Sahi had proposed to make Birendranagar the province capital while Ambar Bahadur Sahi of CPN-UML and Naresh Bhandari of CPN (Maoist Center) seconded the proposal.

Lawmakers from CPN-UML, CPN (Maoist Center) and Nepal Congress voted for the proposal. Only Rastriya Prajatantra Party lawmaker Soshila Sahi voted against .
