QINHUANGDAO, CHINA — A Chinese farmer cracked open an unusually large chicken’s egg to discover its bizarre contents — a second fully-formed egg inside it.
The Qinhuangdao farmer said one of his chickens recently laid a pair of huge eggs and he decided to crack one of them on camera to determine its contents.
The video shows farmer cracks the large egg to reveal a yolk, the egg white and a second fully-formed egg.
“I’ve never seen an egg within another egg in more than 60 years of farming,” he told CCTV News.
Experts said the phenomenon occurs when a second egg begins to form inside the chicken while her body is already in the process of producing an egg.
The unusual occurrence is called a counter-peristalsis contraction.
While the instance is extremely rare, it’s caused when the hen is in the process of forming an egg in her oviduct and another oocyte – the ovum or egg cell that becomes the yolk of the egg – is released too soon.
According to Back Yard Poultry Mag, a hen releases an oocyte from her left ovary into her oviduct every 18 to 26 hours.
Usually, the oocyte travels down the oviduct, adding layers of the egg until it’s laid through the hen’s vent.
But in a counter-peristalsis contraction, a second oocyte is released by the ovary before the first egg has completed its journey.
When the second oocyte’s released, the first is in the eggshell-gland portion of the oviduct, were the shell is made.
