Blocked Badigad River starts overflow

BAGLUNG — The risk of the Badigad River cutting loose after being blocked by a landslide has subsided with water draining out following an overflow.

Landslide debris accumulated in the river at Bhimgithe Turture has formed a two kilometer artificial lake at Badigad River rural municipality-7. The stream had thus turned into a large pond following the blockage.

Thousands of people and their homes were at risk after the stream was blocked for more than six hours. The landslide occurred near Bhimgitthe of Baglung.

The landslide, which swept away boulders from yesterday 11 PM has blocked the river’s natural course. As a result, residents are concerned that it would burst and unleash water with severe consequences.

The risk of the river-turned-pond bursting out now has decreased, thanks to the over flow, locals said.

The local administration has been mobilizing Nepali Army and Police in order to alert the locals of the imminent danger and also shifting people to safer locations, according to Chief District Offier Yadunath Poudel.

Japan to provide Rs 356 million for food assistance in Nepal





KATHMADNU— The Government of Japan has agreed to provide grant assistance of 350 million Yen equivalent to about Rs 356 million to Nepal for carrying out food assistance programme.

The signing of Exchange of Notes towards this end was held on the witness of the foreign ministers of Nepal and Japan.

Ambassador of Nepal to Japan Prativa Rana and Ambassador of Japan to Nepal Mr Masamichi Saigo, on Monday signed the Exchange of Notes on behalf of their respective governments.

The signing ceremony was held after the bilateral meeting between foreign ministers of both countries–Pradeep Kumar Gyawali and Taro Kano– at Ikura House, Tokyo, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The assistance aims to support the Government of Nepal to implement the Food Assistance Program to ensure food security to the Nepali people.

The assistance from Japan will enable Nepal governmnet to procure rice and supply it to needy people.
