JAKARTA — A mob of angry villagers has killed nearly 300 crocodiles at a sanctuary for the animals in the Indonesian province of West Papua after one of the crocs killed one villager.
The slaughter was in retaliation for a local man thought to have been killed by one animal from the site,The Jakarta Post reported.
A local villager identified only as Sugito, who worked at a tofu factory in Sorong, West Papua, was looking for grass to feed his cattle on Saturday when he was bitten by a crocodile.
His screams alerted a local resident who ‘heard him shouting for help but [he] was found dead,’ Olha told The Jakarta Post.
Police officers arrived the incident site, but were unable to control the murderous frenzy and were left to watch as the pile of bodies grew larger.
Officials and police said they were not able to stop the attack and may now press charges as the killing of a protected species is a crime that carries a fine or imprisonment in Indonesia.
