Absconding gangster Manange arrested

KATHMANDU — Police hace arrested absconding gangster and murder convict Rajiv Gurung aka Dipak Manange from the Swayambhu area in the capital on Thursday.

A police team deployed from the Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu, have rounded up Manange, who was elected as an independent candidate to a provincial assembly seat from Manang district.

Manange was found in hiding at Swayambhu, Teendhara area at about 7 pm, Thursday, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police Mohan Kumar Thapa.

Manange was arrested as per the verdict of the then Appellate Court Patan, which had slapped a five-year jail term on him for involvement in ripping apart the right hand of another gangster, Chakre Milan, some 13 years ago,according to Metropolitan Police Range Office Kathmandu.

Earlier in January, the Supreme Court (SC) had convicted Manange in an attempted murder case and sentenced him to five years in prison. He had several run-ins with the law on numerous criminal charges in the past.

A case of attempted murder was filed against Gurung at Kathmandu District Court shortly after the incident. The Supreme Court recently upheld the verdict issued by the then appellate court.

Manange was elected a member of Province 4 provincial assembly from Manang in the recent elections as an independent candidate.

Earlier, police had issued a red corner notice against Manange through the Interpol office at Nepal Police Headquarters. Police mobilized a special team to arrest him whether within or outside the country.

2 killed, 5 injured in tractor accident

HETAUDA — Two persons were killed and five others were seriously injured after a tractor fell off the road last evening at Panchpandav village in Bagmati Rural Municipality-4, Makawanpur.

Police said that 50-year-olds Hem Kumar Shrestha and Bakhat Rai of Hariharpur Rural Municipality in Sindhuli district lost their lives in the fatal accident.

Shrestha died on the spot while Rai breathed his last on the way to a hospital in Hetauda, police added. The tractor (Na 6 Ta 442) was heading to Sindhuli district from Phawarbari in Makawanpur by supplying construction materials.

Those seriously hurt in the incident are Shivamaya Magar, Shakti Rai, Mohan Rai, Krishna Rai and Tilak Rai. The incident site is near Makawanpur-Sindhuli border along Dharan-Chatara road section.
