WASHINGTON — At least five people have been killed by Hurricane Florence, that made landfall in North Carolina on Friday, Al Jazeera reported.

The storm’s first casualties, which included a mother and her baby killed when a tree fell on their brick house in Wilmington, North Carolina, were announced about eight hours after Florence came ashore on Friday (local time). The child’s father was taken to a hospital.

Two people died in Lenoir County — a 78-year-old man was electrocuted attempting to connect extension cords while another man died when he was blown down by high winds while checking on his hunting dogs, a county spokesman said.

In Pender County, North Carolina, a woman suffered a heart attack and died because hurricane debris blocking roads prevented paramedics from reaching her.

Police confirmed the fatalities on Twitter, saying the father of the child was being transported to a local medical centre to be treated for his injuries.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, warning the residents not to go outdoors during the storm, wrote on Twitter, “This storm is going to continue its violent grind across our state for days. Be alert. To those in the storm path, if you can hear me – please stay sheltered in place. Do NOT go out into this storm.”
